June 3rd Newsletter!

Hey Everyone!

It's June and Summer is here!  Before I get to promoting our store and products, I'd like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe and fun-filled Summer.  Get out there and enjoy all that our valley has to offer -  Beer and wine festivals, music festivals, camping, hiking and all of the other outdoor activities we're famous for.

New Products!

We've gotten some new items in at the store that some of y'all have been asking for.  I'm really excited to be bringing these things to you, and as always, if there is anything we don't have that you would like us to carry just let us know!

1.  Belgian beer bottles, corks and closures.  We received Belgian beer bottles in 500ml crown finish and 750 ml cork finish as well as the corks and wire closures for them.  Want to classy up that next brew?  We've got you covered.

2.  Stainless steel fittings and hardware.  We've got the pieces you need to spiffy up that brew kettle or mash tun - ball valves, bazooka screens, couplers, stems, locknuts washers... and the silicone o-rings and washers to go with them.  Shiny!

3.  New malts.  Recently we've added Chateau Belgian Pilsner, Weyermann Vienna and Dingemans Cara 20 (Caravienne).

4.  New hops.  We've also added even more hops - Jarrylo™, Azacca™, Polaris, Mandarina Bavaria, Hallertau Blanc, Waimea, and two Virginia grown hops.

5.  New Yeasts.  These haven't come in yet, but we have placed an order with RVA Yeast Labs out of Richmond for some native Virginia yeasts.  Expect a post on Facebook when these arrive.

And don't forget our Hard Pink Lemonade and Hard Limeade wine kits!

News!

Now for some news and a request for help - As of this month we are listed in BYO, Zymurgy, and Mid-Atlantic Brewing News.  We've also got an ad running this month in Blue Ridge Outdoors.  Combined with our social media efforts we're doing a pretty good job of getting our name out there, but we could still use your help.  In addition to liking our posts on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram what we really need at this point is for you all to review us on various websites.  We aren't asking you to sugar coat anything, what we would like are honest, thoughtful reviews on sites like:

https://plus.google.com/+SouthernHillsHomebrewSupplyRoanoke/
http://www.yelp.com/biz/southern-hills-homebrew-supply-roanoke
http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/40186/

Good (and bad) reviews really impact a business' search rankings.  Please help us get the word out about our products and selection.

We're brewing!  Sort of, at least.  This past week we received a new induction cook top at the store.  On Sunday I was able to brew a full volume extract batch of a Moose Drool clone.  I started a 6.5 gallon boil at about 11:00 in the morning and the wort was chilled by 2:30.  I took the wort home where I fermented it with Safale S-04.  It is still bubbling as I type this.

Well, as I've got about 25 gallons of beer at home right now, I'd like to offer up our store for YOU to brew in.  I haven't worked out the details yet, but please contact me if this is something you are interested in.  We have the cooktop, a 10 gallon pot, a wort chiller and a 3 bay sink at our disposal.  You can't pitch the yeast here, but you can brew and chill your wort while hanging out at the store.  If space is at a premium at your place then give us a call!

Something else. Last week a photographer from the Roanoke Times came in to the store and took some pictures for an article that is supposed to run this Sunday about businesses in the Clearbrook area of Roanoke.  I spoke with Tiffany Holland for a little while about our experience opening and running a store here.  So look for at least a mention of us in Sunday's paper!

What is going on with our upstairs? We are working on getting our loft area upstairs ready for some exciting developments.  Stay tuned!

June 21st is Father's Day.  Want to get dad something brewing related, but you're not quite sure what to get him?  We've got gift cards available in $10, $25, $50 and $100 increments.  Nothing says "Thanks for everything you've done for me Dad!" like a gift card.

And Last But Certainly Not Least

Thank you all for the support you've shown us over the last two months.  It's scary to walk away from a 20 year career and do something completely different, but I think we've got something special going on here.  And I think you think so too.

Remember, all active Star City Brewers Guild and American Homebrewers Association members get 10% off every order, every day.  Also, if you've got one of our nifty Southern Hills Homebrew Supply T-Shirts and post a picture of yourself out and about on Facebook we'll also give you a 10% discount the next time you're in the store!

If you found this newsletter informative, please forward it to your friends.  We love you guys!

Cheers!
